Chinese Celebration-The Year of the Horse 2014

Our class enjoyed celebrating the Chinese New Year with family and friends!  This is the Year of the Horse.

Here we are performing our Ribbon Dance for our family and friends.
Then we played a game similar to Duck, Duck, Goose but with a red ribbon.
We loved eating our Chinese food with chopsticks!
The class loved eating the noodles and chicken!
Our class also wished we could eat like this every school day!
We cannot wait to learn more about China!

FUN WITH SYMMETRY! SYMMETRY IS ALL AROUND US!

Children explored with pattern blocks to make symmetrical patterns.

The children found patterns that could be symmetrical vertically and horizontally.

There are many items in our room that were symmetrical.

Look what we made!

Out on the nature trail today we found even more symmetrical items.

Chinese Brush Painting

Our class has started a unit on Ancient China.

We are learning how to brush paint.

Each of us had a brush, ink pad, and plenty of paper to practice.

You have to use your whole arm when making a paint stroke.

We started working on making leaves.

You have to start from the bottom and then bring your brush up.

We practiced a lot and then we took them home to share with our parents.

Next time we will use rice paper to make our final picture.

Pueblo Pottery

We are making clay pots and symbols to place on our pots like the Pueblos.  Each child has made a pinch pot so far.  We had to practice several times so that we had a plan before we begun to paint the actual pottery.

I WONDER ?

The second grade has been adding their "I Wonders?"  to this bulletin board in our second grade hallway.  The yellow sticky is the "I Wonder?" and the pink sticky is the answer.  Teachers and peers are answering the questions.
